Department of Economics LOGO DESIGN CONTEST

The Department of Economics (DE), CEM, UPLB held a logo design contest entitled "[de]sign" last July 13-30, 2004 in line with the department's desire to create a definitive symbol of the institution as the department envisions itself to remain at the forefront of Economics instruction, research and training with the aim of supporting national goals and objectives.

Following are the winners of the contest:

BEST LOGO DESIGN

Description: Economics should never be complicated; it should be simplified - this is what the logo is all about. The department does not profess to solve every problem of the economy of the Philippines, but it simply strives to contribute possible solutions to these problems through instruction, research and extension. As DE pursues this objective, it aims to be highly dynamic in every possible way. Likewise, the logo does not desire to encompass everything about the institution and its various fields, but it simply tries to convey the department's focus. Such analogy is done by representing Instruction, Research and Extension with three horizontal bars. Then, the department's focused dynamism is signified by a bullet that pierces the tri-function horizontal bars, making a dent on these bars, urging the department to move forward and advance its goal at the pace of a threatening bullet. All of these meanings may seem to complicate the logo, but taking a step back to simply appreciate the design reveals the initials DE of the Department of Economics - economics made simple.

1st Runner-Up

Description: The initials D and E are capitalized, representing the boldness and conviction of the department in promoting its cause. These two initials are intertwined to signify that the vision, mission, objectives and everything else that constitutes the department's existence are connected together by the department members' passion to make a betterment of society in the field of economics. The square that bounds the initials stands for the constant factors in the world of economics, such as the principles, theories and economic thought that keep the discipline of economics stable and in order. On the other hand, the circle that bounds the whole design symbolizes the field of economics as a continuum of knowledge, where new information and applications are being discovered everyday with the development of thought. The circle also denotes the never-ending possibilities of applying economics to practical situations in the real world, as well as the undying passion of the department to promote and enrich economics. Moreover, the logo boasts of a simple design, yet the underlying ideas in the meaningful elements of the logo show how rich the world of economics is, especially in knowledge and significance to society.

2nd Runner-Up

Description: The major thrust of the Department of Economics (DE) is to equip its students with tools for exploratory and practical study in Economics and other related fields, as well as to conduct extensive research and training activities to extend itself to society. These thrusts are symbolized by the three regions of the design. The upper-left region is an image of the department's scholastic endeavor to educate both undergraduate and graduate students. The color Green is used to show its valiance in teaching various people in the field of economics at any age, at any time. Then, in the upper-right region is the image of a globe, which signifies global awareness and service to the whole community of man. Meanwhile, the lower region mounted in Blue encompasses the nature of the field of economics, which concentrates on managing resources for humanity. Moreover, most of the rigors of economics is represented in the design by mathematical and statistical symbols, as well as analytical tools for monetary transactions. The Peso sign, being a common symbol of the Philippine economy, is to be found on top of a graph, forming an image that envisions the Peso regaining its value. The letters 'de' are then inscribed on the center of the logo, allowing all the purposes signified by the regions of the design to meet on only one department, the Department of Economics. Finally, the image points downward to refer to the complete name of the department.
