The Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) is the research and development arm on forest products utilization of the Philippines' Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the body that coordinates and manages the national science and technology system.

Researchers promote technologies to Bicol pili stakeholders

FPRDI’s handicraft and furniture technologies reach Nueva Ecija and Antique

Ever since the FPRDI techno-transfer team visited them, several handicraft and furniture entrepreneurs in Nueva Ecija and Antique have started dreaming new dreams for their businesses. “We can expect a lot of growth in the handicraft and furniture industries in these provinces in the coming years,” says Forester Felix B. Tamolang, head of FPRDI’s Technology Promotion and Public Assistance Section under the Technical Services Staff. “ The businessmen are open to new ideas and the areas are rich in raw materials. There are also available credit facilities, agencies willing to assist and large potential markets.” ..... Details

FPRDI launches productivity program

Representatives of each of FPRDI’s divisions receive token “walis-tingting” during the recent launching of the 5-S Productivity Improvement Program (PIP). To culminate at the FPRDI’s Golden Anniversary Celebration next year, the program intends to boost the FPRDI staff’s work efficiency by teaching them to sort, systematize, sweep, standardize and develop self-discipline.

Two technologies receive LBSCFI awards

Two FPRDI innovations were named among the best projects in this year’s celebration of the National Science and Technology Week by the Los Baños Science Community Foundation, Inc. The bamboo veneer lathe received the 2006 Philippine Agriculture and Resources Research Foundation, Inc. R&D (Development) Award while the FPRDI electrical resistance moisture meter for the furniture and handicraft industries bagged the Florentino O. Tesoro Technology Transfer Award.........Details

FPRDI marks 49th year

The FPRDI family celebrated the Institute’s 49th birthday last July 4 and 5 in a variety of activities: signing of the covenant to abide by the new Manual on Administrative Procedures by concerned division and section chiefs; launching of the FPRDI Productivity Improvement Program in collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment; a research chair lecture by Dr. Rico J. Cabangon (featuring his paper “Physical Properties and Flexural Viscoelastic Behavior of Wood Wool Cement Board); presentation of the proposed FPRDI Hymn; giving of service and achievement awards; as well as table tennis, parlor games and a videoke singing contest. FPRDI joins ITTO rattan project

Better days may be up ahead for the rattan sector in the ASEAN region as the FPRDI joined hands with the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the University of the Philippines Los Baños College of Forestry and Natural Resources (UPLBCFNR) to implement the project “Demonstration and Application of Production and Utilization Technologies for Rattan Sustainable Development in the ASEAN Member Countries”. Funded by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), this four-year project aims to strengthen ASEAN cooperation in alleviating poverty at the community level through a network that prioritizes the development of the region’s rattan sector...... CFC head visits FPRDI

Ambassador Ali Mchumo, Managing Director of the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) – Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) paid a courtesy call to Director Florence P. Soriano and visited the FPRDI’s Cococoir Binderless Board Pilot Plant Facility last April 27. The facility has recently been rehabilitated using CFC funds amounting to USD 84,710........Details
