A.B. Ella attends international forestry
meets

Forester Arsenio B. Ella with Dr. Takao Itoh,
Chair of the 6th Pacific Wood Anatomy Conference (PRWAC) Organizing
Committee. At the background is Ella’s poster, Comparative bark
and wood anatomy of some resin-yielding and non-resin-yielding
Philippine Canarium species
Arsenio B. Ella, Scientist III, learned about the
latest issues and research findings in dipterocarp forest management
and wood anatomy in separate international conferences in November
and December last year.
The 8th Round Table Conference on Dipterocarps in Ho Chi Minh City,
Vietnam gave Ella new insights into the conservation, regeneration
and protection of dipterocarps, still considered tropical Asia’s
most important family of trees. On the other hand, the 6th Pacific
Regional Wood Anatomy Conference (PRWAC) in Kyoto, Japan, highlighted
trends in wood anatomy and discussed the impact of wood anatomy
in science, technology and forest resources management.
Ella’s third successive attendance to the PRWAC has honed his skills
in wood anatomy and wood identification, and paved the way for possible
research tie-ups with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science
(JSPS) and the Royal Botanic Gardens (RBG) in the United Kingdom.
