Two technologies receive LBSCFI awards
Two FPRDI innovations were named among the best projects in this
year’s celebration of the National Science and Technology Week by
the Los Baños Science Community Foundation, Inc. The bamboo
veneer lathe received the 2006 Philippine Agriculture and Resources
Research Foundation, Inc. R&D (Development) Award while the
FPRDI electrical resistance moisture meter for the furniture and
handicraft industries bagged the Florentino O. Tesoro Technology
Transfer Award.
A research team led by Engr. Belen B. Bisana developed the improved
bamboo veneer lathe that produces veneers at seven thickness levels.
Made from local materials, the lathe can convert bamboo culms to
produce a wide range of exportable engineered bamboo products such
as table tops, floor tiles and other laminates. Engr. Bisana’s co-workers
included Dante B. Pulmano, Felix B. Tamolang, Carolyn Marie C. Garcia
and Elizabeth N. Dioso.
The moisture meter, on the other hand, was made in response to
the demand of the furniture and handicraft industries. Calibrated
using local wood species, it is functionally comparable to imported
ones, cheaper and easily constructed. Thru an intensified and integrated
marketing strategy, the gadget was promoted and eventually made
accessible to intended users. The project team was made up of Engr.
Gil B. Dolotina, Dr. Marina A. Alipon and Grecelda Eusebio.
